AsBuilt for Coal Transfer Chute Design

The Challenge:

AsBuilt was contracted to capture the head chutes, flop gate, load zones, drives, and interconnecting chute work of coal handling system.  This system has been in operation for decades with multiple upgrades and changes since the original installation.   This system was underground in difficult to access area.

The Solution:

The solution was to scan and model the existing equipment arrangement.  The 3D model was used as the design background for the future design and to place updated equipment.

Quick Facts:

Capture of the As-Is Condition – Many years had passed since the equipment was designed and installed.  The only cost-effective way to create an accurate as-built drawing was to 3D scan and model the subject area.

3D Model Used for Design – After the area was scanned and the model created, the engineering team was able to begin the design phase.  The design team was able to perfect the flow modeling based upon the shapes and constraints provided in the 3D model space.

Precise Measurements – Scanning provides a means to capture equipment in its precise location.  This allows the design engineers to confidently fit new equipment in tight spaces with little room for error.

Drawing Package Creation – After scanning, modeling, and designing in 3D, the engineering team was able to provide all the necessary drawings for fabrication and installation.  The fabrication shop and installation crews work in both 2D and 3D.  The chosen path simplified the workflow and provided all necessary drawings.

Deliverables:

  • Point Cloud
  • 3D Modeling
  • Clash Detection
  • 3D Design Backgrounds
