AsBuilt for Rail Alignment

The Challenge:

A 40-year-old coal fired power plant was experiencing issues with the Tripper Car rails due to misalignment. The rails were out of alignment in multiple planes, but true and straight was difficult to determine due to equipment and flooring issues.

The Solution:

AsBuilt utilized 3D laser scanning to capture the as-is conditions of the 900-foot-long room. The scans captured the conveyor, rails, and floor elevations. The scan data was used to develop a heat mapped image of the tripper rails to determine in which direction the rails should be moved.

Quick Facts:

  • Captured During Normal Plant Operation

AsBuilt was able to scan the in-scope areas while the plant was in operation, which allows for maintenance to be done during outage.

  • 3D Visualization

Even though the rails were over 700 feet long, the entire rail was viewed as one versus in sections.

  • Reduced Timeline

AsBuilt was able to capture both rails in two days of scanning. The point cloud was processed, and the data was put to work within a week of scanning.

  • Reduced Manual Measuring

To manually measure the rails, the system would have to be down for an extended period of time. Manual measuring also introduces errors to the collected data, which makes the data unreliable.

Deliverables:

  • Point Cloud
  • Heat Map Comparison
  • Multi Plane Alignment Solutions
